Trend: Neoprene

Inspiration Jan 19, 2012

There’s no time like the present to start wearing wetsuit inspired dresses, tops, leggings and a host of other neoprene pieces. Although I can’t help but think this whole ‘surf luxe’ trend is one of the more ridiculous S/S12 looks, the super tight fabric makes for perfect body contouring. If you live somewhere moderately warm this is best kept for those trans-seasonal nights – but not so good for high summer.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a trend worth a second look unless there were possible DIYs.  I’ll be hunting in my local thrift store to find some secondhand wetsuits – and then cutting and embellishing them to look like some of the pieces below. You could also check out your local Target or Walmart and pick up a rash vest to cut out and embellish. Given that the plastic wetsuit style zip is a key component to this look – how about sewing an oversized neon pink or yellow plastic zip onto the back of a black tube skirt or singlet?

If you’re feeling like this is all too much for you – dip your toe into the trend (so to speak) by picking up some wetsuit style leggings and wearing with super high heels and a slouchy tee.
