DIY Mesh One Shoulder top

DIY Style May 28, 2014

There’s nothing I like more than a piece of clothing that takes (in total) around eight minutes to make. And when said item is not only made from my favourite material but is actually a little flattering on – well that’s pretty much the best thing ever. You’ll be aware of my addiction to anything mesh related from when I made my black mesh pencil skirt (STILL wear it!), and recently I decided to put my hand to the top version. Sew easy! Read on to see how.

Wearing: Vintage leather skirt (like this), Black clutch (like this), Topshop heels.

I have to say, white mesh feels so perfect for summer. I’ve got another mesh-y project in the works for you too – can’t wait to show you!

You need:

  • White mesh fabric
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Thread
  • A sewing machine

How to:

1. Cut your piece of fabric to 1.5 m long (60 inches) and the width a normal baggy t-shirt would be on you (mine was 50cm – 20 inches – wide). Basically you would want to be able to fold this piece of fabric in half widthways and be able to lay a t-shirt onto the fabric.

2. Lay the fabric out and then do a twist widthways in the middle.

3. Once you have the twist (that’s your one should you just created!) fold the fabric in half so that the edges are laid on top of each other.

4. Sew along the edges to create the side seams, making sure to leave room for the armholes – leave a few inches more on one side to allow for the open shoulder.

Voila! I wore mine with a simple triangle bra and put one of the straps over the top of my head and on one side of my shoulder (instant one shoulder bra!). You could also wear a singlet top in the same way if you wanted more coverage.

Photos by lovely Marion Tessier – we’ve been doing lots of fun shoots recently and I can’t wait to show you what I’ve been making!
