Tips & Tricks for Decorating With Fake Plants

Interiors Feb 28, 2019

Fake plants! We’re going there.

My love of indoor plants is something I’ve delved into time and time again here, so you might be surprised to see me chatting on the topic of fake plants. But hear me out. As much as I love indoor plants, try as I might there are just some places in the house that plans will not survive, no matter how much I preen and pamper them. And then theres the high spots in the house where I can rarely reach and for which maintenance is impossible… These corners are literally where my plants go to die, and so I’ve decided that rather than leave those corners bare, I’ve started experimenting with fake ones. Even if your house doesn’t have any of these corners, there are plenty of other reasons you might want to embrace the fake – maybe you have a brown thumb or travel so much you can’t keep them alive. For this reason, it’s worth looking into!

Over the last few months experimenting with fake plants I’ve worked out ways to make them an asset to a space, rather than something you might be embarrassed about. It helps that I recently worked with Adairs and got my hands on some really great fake versions. Because in case you weren’t aware, there are good fakes, and there are bad ones! So today I’m sharing a few tips for you about how to use them in your space.

Tips and Tricks for Using Fake Plants in Your Space

Get your hands on some good fakes

As I mentioned, there is a huge difference between good fakes (like these ones from Adairs) and not so good ones, and if you’re going to spend your hard earned cash on fake plants, you’re going to want them to look legit. Personally, I think the best way is to compare the two, working out what type of plant the fake one is and researching what a real one would look like. Know that the better fake plants are going to cost more than the ones that aren’t as great. It’s worth it though!

Think about where you put them

Placement of fakes is everything. If you’re worried the ones you have don’t look as real as you would like, you can stick to putting them in places where people don’t spend lots of time looking at them. I usually need them in places that sunlight doesn’t reach, or on shelves or where they are high up, and in both these locations they usually don’t come under too much scrutiny.

Mix it up

One way to make your fakes plants appear more life like is to mix them in with real ones. In a living room, for example, you could have a real fiddle leaf fig and then have a bunch of drapey vines on your book shelves that aren’t real. Mixing it up works wonders to add greenery without as much effort.

Upgrade the planter

Another way to give your fakes more life is to re-home them in a nice planter. Ditch the one the one it came in and swap it for a basket or a terracotta pot. Also consider adding dirt on top and some nice pebbles to complete the look.

Remember to maintain

Just because your plant isn’t real it doesn’t mean you can just forget about it completely. Because nothing screams sad fake than when your plant is covered in dust. Give your leaves and nice wash or wipe every two weeks!

What do you think, would you use fake plants in your space?
