How to Plan & What To Pack for A Trip to Phuket

Travel Guides Jul 4, 2019

I can’t believe I haven’t been on a girls trip since before Frankie was born, and considering she’s about to turn one I decided it was high time I did it.

My friend Bridget and I spent a lot of time trying to decide where we wanted to go, there were so many destinations and considerations for a short trip in June. Jaipur (too hot), Marrakech (too far), Bali (too busy), so in the end we settled on a short jaunt to Phuket. I haven’t visited Phuket since 2011 (other than when I travelled through on the way to Phi Phi), so I was excited to explore a few new things. Once again, this lush island didn’t disappoint.

That feeling when you find a breeze.

How to Plan

Phuket is a surprisingly large island, which can take an hour or so to drive across. Add to that the fact that the traffic can make traversing the island a major exercise, and you’d be smart to choose one area to base yourself out of and take a few day trips around the island. Or, if you plan to stay for a more lengthy trip (a week or so) you could choose two different places to stay, say, in the north and south of the island. I would suggest you avoid the bigger party areas like Patong, and instead opt for the more relaxed areas like Surin,

Where to stay

We stayed at The Surin at Surin beach, a hotel I’ve wanted to check out for ages! Because it was June we were lucky to get low season prices, making our little treehouse villa very affordable. Add to it the fact that the weather was surprisingly good, with only a few storms in the afternoons, and you’ve got a pretty decent trip!

What to do

Phuket Old Town I have always been a fan of Phuket Old Town, it has so much character and charm, and by some stroke of luck doest attract the same type of clientele as other (less savoury) areas like Patong. Its great for an afternoon of exploring and an early dinner.

Go beaching The beaches in Phuket can be some of the best, so long as you pick the right ones. I like Surin and Hat Naihan Beaches,

Skip Patong Phuket is amazing if you are able to edit your trip to skip the seedier sides of the island. Patong is one of them and trust me you won’t miss anything!

Get a Massage You’d be crazy to come to Thailand and not get a massage every day. And there are so many options! You can get a very cheap and cheerful one on most beaches, or you can opt for a higher end massage in a space at a resort. Usually when I go to a beach destination like this I try to get one every day, a fancy one and the rest casual beach massages.

How to pack

No matter what time of year you visit Phuket, you’ll be faced with hot, and most likely humid, weather. Meaning you should fill your suitcase with breathable, comfortable pieces that can easily transition from outdoor adventures to cocktails around the pool. I gravitate towards linen, cotton and silk pieces that roll in my suitcase, and that can be hung near the shower for a quick steam and de-wrinkle.

Pink and brown prettiness.

That blue door.

Waiting for my sticky rice…

Beautiful beaches in Phuket.

Three pretty sisters.
