New Years Eve is always a funny one, something I look forward to for literally months which often then slips past wayyyy too quickly in a blur of getting ready and uncountable glasses of champagne. This year I’ll be celebrating with friends and family in Byron Bay, and naturally I thought it essential that we have some sort of shimmering crafted decorations on hand, so I created this silver piƱata. Super easy to make, you can fill it with sweets or other party treats, or simply hang it empty and keep it up all year!
You need:
- cardboard
- silver paper
- tape
- glue
- scissors
- ruler
- pen
- rope
How to:
1. Create a template for a triangle which measures 40cm high (16 inches) and 30cm (12 inches) wide. Trace around the template on cardboard to create 6 triangles.
2. Cut out 6 triangles.
3. Tape 3 triangles together.
4. Fold the 3 triangles together to create a pyramid and seal the edge.
5. Create two of these pyramids.
6. Tie a large knot on the end of the piece of rope and thread it through the top of the pyramid. Secure the top with enough tape so that the knot can’t get through!
7. Then tape the two pyramids together.
8. Cut stripes of silver paper and glue or tape it our edges.
9. Do this for all the edges.
10. Next cut strips of silver paper 7.5cm (3 inches) wide and cut slits into the paper to create a fringe effect.
11. Glue or tape the strips of fringe onto the piƱata and cut to size at the edges.
12. Layer the next row of fringe under the previous row.
13. Keep going until you have covered the whole thing!
Super cute diy idea!

I’m so glad you like it š
This is so cute! If I were having a NYE party, I would definitely include this!
Put it on your list for your next party!
This looks quite easy! love it!
Maybe to make it a functional pinata, like to fill with treats etc I could recommend joining the two halves with a weaker tape- like painters tape.
Thanks for the tip! š
This is such a great idea! I can definitely see myself using this tutorial several times throughout the year. I’m of Mexican heritage, and my family always buys piƱatas whenever one of my younger family members celebrates a birthday. But, why buy one when you can make it?

Hi Geneva! Thought this was a great idea to try and make for my wedding in a couple of months. And it turned out great!! I filled the bottom pyramid with lollies and chocolate (I’ll give it to friend for his bday) and also I used double sided tape to place the fringes on the cardboard which definitely made it easier than making a mess with the glue haha.
I love your projects and hope to try a few more. Thank you xx
