When off the shoulder silhouettes are your jam.
And in case you haven’t noticed, they’re definitely mine.Ā Maybe it’s that they remind me of a past life as a German Beer Girl, orrrr bring to mind holidays in the sun where tops and bras with straps are banned. Either way, I find them endlessly easy to wear, and also to make (!). I’ve crafted a few styles in the last year or so (see here, here, here and here), and each one has been a little easier to make and to wear than the last. This one is my favourite design yet – a gathered waist skirt neckline with arm holes sewn on. Easy! Read on to see how.

DIY Off The Shoulder Top
1
Cut two squares of fabric approximately the size of your shoulders to your waist. If your piece of fabric is wide enough you can fold your fabric in half and then cut along the fold. I used the selvedge of the fabric for the bottom to avoid hemming.
2
Measure how long you want your sleeves to be and then cut two smaller rectangles of fabric which will form your sleeves.
3
Fold your rectangle sleeves in half and pin the open sides to the side seams of your top, aligned with the top of the garment.
4
Sew your sleeves to the body of the garment whilst also sewing the sides of your front and back pieces together.
6
Measure your elastic and double that measurement. Fold the top of your garment inwards according to that measurement. Sew along the bottom of the folded section to create a fabric loop leaving room between the start and finish.
7
Take something sharp like a wooden screwer or safety pin and attach it to the elastic. Thread it through until the elastic appears at the other end. Sew the elastic together.
Like what you see? Or just want to save it for later?

Like this DIY? Pin it!
I see so many off the shoulder tops and dresses but nothing that really impresses me!! So your DIY comes just in time (and I did remember last year’s DIY as well)! Now all I have to do is decide on fabric! Shouldn’t worry though as my office is next to the fabric selling area of Athens!
great outfit! and this top looks amazing!

Geneva, you are a master of off-the-shoulder tops :)))
Love your new creation, such a great color and a winning cut (as usual).
It is funny but I am currently working on pretty much the same off shoulder top DIY. What I mean “pretty much the same” is actually the way how to connect the sleeves to the body part. This pattern requires only one elastic band on the top (in your previous DIYs you had separate elastics for the sleeves). I think this is a very practical cut, and it allows to lift arms without any problems!
Great job – as usual! Thanks for being our inspiration, Geneva!

Thank you so much for this DIY! I find sewing really difficult, but I made it and it looks very nice! Thanks!
Beautiful top! I’ve been experimenting with off the shoulder but I wonder what you wear underneath? Strapless bra? Bandeau? How do you achieve this effortless look without flashing the world or being weighed down by straps?
I made this today, and just wanted to say that this makes an awesome crop top too!! Great design š
Such a cute top and a simple tutorial – thanks!

Hi Geneva!
i love your DIYs! if possible, can we get some more dimension specifics for this off-the-shoulder top? I’m a total beginner when it comes to sewing, and a perfectionist for anything i do (pretty deadly combo… i know), so it would help me tremendously to get any extra details.
Thanks!!

I am trying to make it just now, just it’s not very clear how you leave that gap in between the shoulders and the bodice piece. I can’t work it out. Mine is looking like a T shape which I guess it won’t leave me much room for moving my arms š HELP,
Thanks
