There’s nothing better than a simple white shirt – classic and the perfect piece for when you want to feel completely timeless. Other times, you want to wear something classic, but with a twist. That’s where small details like sleeves, cut outs and folding can change the look or an outfit so much. A white shirt comes into its own with the addition of a cut out at the back (IMHO). And so easy to do! Grab a simple cotton shirt from the back of your closet or a thrift store and away you go!
DIY Open Back Shirt
You need:
- A cotton shirt
- Scissors
- A needle and thread or sewing machine
How to:
- Cut the shirt open in a straight line from the bottom hem to the back seam. If there is no seam you may want to go to the collar seam instead – note the shirt will open a lot when you wear it.
2. It should look like this.
3. Pin the new edge down, making sure to roll it over to stop if fraying. Iron well.
4. Sew down.
Voila! You can go braless if the fabric of your top is heavy enough and your boosies can handle it, or wear a bra with minimalist fastening (I sometimes wear a simple clip back bikini top) for more coverage/security.
