A Guide to Dried Flowers (& Where To Shop!)

Plants Mar 4, 2020

Wow. So many of you have asked about this.

Every time I share about my DIY vases more than 50 people email or DM us asking for where they can buy dried flowers and leaves. And I get it! Dried flowers are honestly so so great to have around the house, they last pretty much forever, and can be infinitely rearranged. So I get why you guys want to go out and stock up! Personally, I like to buy mine as various bunches of different types rather than made up bouquets, I think that just gives you s bit more flexibility to use them in different ways. That said, you can always buy a nice dried bouquet and break it up!

What To Buy

This is where it’s useful to know the names of the flowers you like, particularly if you are planning to buy them online. It can be hard if you don’t know the names! Here are some for you:

  • Bunny Tails
  • Dried Ruscus
  • Cotton Stems (note that sometimes these are made and not harvested, which isn’t as nice)
  • Dried Wheatgrass
  • Stirlingia
  • Straw Flowers
  • Dried Palm Fronds
  • Pampas Grass
  • Feather Pampas
  • Silver Dollar
  • Ozothamnus (rice flower)

Left to right: Cotton Stems, Ruscus, Pampas Grass, Pink Bunny Tails, Local Foraged Grasses, Stirlingia, pink dyed Rice Flower, Straw Flowers.

Where To Get Them

Firstly, I got all of mine from a store in my local flower market, Flower Lovers which is in Rocklea in Brisbane. Knowing that not all of you live in the same area as me, I would suggest that you try your local flower market! The other thing I would suggest is to keep your eyes peeled when you are out and about – often you can find dry grasses that have lovely seeds or flowers that will surprise you in how pretty they can look in a vase.

You can of course buy them online, and there are lots of places. Anthropologie has some great options (love this and this), as does Urban Outfitters (love these! and these), West Elm (these, these and these)Ā andĀ Luxe by Pampas Grass.Ā If you’re in Australia some great stores to check out are The Peach Fox,Ā Cocomumu Flowers and Barefoot Gypsy. Ā Ā Note that depending on where you are buying from you may have customs issues with bringing in flowers, so often it’s best to buy within your country.
