Ok so I’ll be the first to admit that to me, Diptyque candles are the ultimate. No other candle smells as good, and once used they make a perfect jewelry/make up brush holder. What more could a girl want? But a recent foray into frugality (more frugal than usual that is) has left my diptyque candle fund severely depleted (girl’s gotta eat right?), so I decided to have a go at making my own. Whilst not a lot could compete with the real thing, I did my best to get some scented candle action in my life. To me the difference between diptyque and other candles is the quality of scent, so if you’re going to splash out on anything spend your money on some good quality essential oils to add to the wax mix.
You need:
– A glass tumbler
– Wax beads
– A wick
– Tape
– A knitting needle or pen
– Essential oils (I used rose and vanilla – feel free to get creative and mix your own scents!)
How to:Ā
1. Fill the tumbler with wax beads.
2. Put the beads in a pyrex jug in a pot of water and bring to boil.
3. Add your essential oil. For each candle I added around 10 drops of oil.
Ā 4. Using some wax, fix the wick to the bottom of the glass.
Ā
5. Tape the wick to the knitting needle/pen balanced on the glass so that the wick doesn’t collapse when the wax is poured in. Then pour the wax into the tumbler (careful, it’s very hot!!) and let it set overnight.
6. If your wax dries with a dip in the middle (which can happen when it shrinks), heat a little more wax and fill so the surface of the candle is flat. Finally, cut the end of the wick to around an inch long.
Enjoy!

I love this idea. You could also always repurpose those old Diptyque tumblers… then again, that could feel like cheating!

I did this last year, but it didn’t worked. The smell was very sheer although I used a lot of oil. It was a very good sweet orange oil.
I have no idea, what I did wrong… maybe the wax was to hot?
My favorite Diptyque is Fig. It smells like a summer holiday in Greece. I got it as a present, it’s so unbelievable expensive, I would never buy it for myself I think.
But do you know what else smells like fig now: nail polish from USLU Airlines!

I can’t stopp smelling my nails because it’s so good, but it might look weird ;-))

I used to make candles too! Here’s a tip I used: melt coulored crayons with the wax to make pretty colourful candles! you can even mix colours to make a swirly pattern or make the candle in layers, letting each layer dry before you add the next one in a different colour.
happy candle making!

Always wanted to try DIY’d candles. Thank you for inspiration!
Just one question: how do you clean a Pyrex mug when your’re done?
This is so cool and useful, I did something like this a few years ago using dye. I made a gradient by making thin layers: I put a layer of dyed wax and let it dry then I put another layer on (with dyed wax in a lighter color) and repeated te same step until a got a super cool rainbow candle.

I keep seeing the Diptyque candles everywhere and the first thing I think to myself is, Why am I the only one who can’t seem to afford to pay so much for a candle right now? š This project is great, it adds a personal touch to your home, and shows that frugality should push people to get more creative. Love!

I just wanna know how you clean your pyrex jug after you are finished with the process.
Great job with these diptyque candles! This is basically the same process I follow when I make candles for gifts for my friends. My favorite scents are jasmine, strawberry, peppermint, and lavender. I also add coloring while the wax is still liquid. Iām actually experimenting with coloring techniques to make them look more interesting.

Love this idea. Can I use any glass tumbler or does it have to be heat resistant. I’m afraid it will break when I pour in the hot was. ???
1. What size wick? What brand of wick?
2. How high of temp should the melted wax be?
3. What temp do you add the scent?
4. Should the wick be taut or loose like yours?
5. Will the wick come loose if it’s just held with wax?

This is beautiful, but you might like to look into the sustainability & health issues with parrafin wax – it’s really horrible stuff, and made from crude oil at that! Beeswax and soy wax are much more renewable, and the fumes are healthier too.
