DIY Quick Summer Top

The thought of making your own clothes from scratch can be more than just a little bit daunting, even for me. I mean, it’s one thing to cut off a pair of denim jeans or hack up a dress, but a different thing completely to start with a piece of fabric and end with something you can actually wear. Right? After years of doing this, you’d think I wouldn’t bat an eyelid with a bolt of fabric and an idea in mind. But I have to admit that’s actually not true, often deciding what it will be and making that first cut is truly scary. And I have plenty of corpses in the DIY graveyard to prove it’s not all smooth sailing. When in doubt? I usually just make something really, ridiculously, stupidly easy. As in, a five year old could do this kinda easy. I’ve said it before but the trick for having such easy projects look good is choosing nice fabrics, all of a sudden everything looks expensive and (hopefully) imperfections aren’t as obvious. This top is one of those types of projects, take two squares and sew them together and really, that’s it. Use nice fabric and you’ve got something that could have just as well been bought! Read on to see how.

You Need:

  • Rope
  • Fabric
  • Scissor
  • Needle and thread

How to:

1. Measure how long you want your top to be and cut two piece of fabrics to identical sizes. Refer above for suggested lengths. Then, hem the two pieces of fabric all the way around.

2. Once the fabric is ready, hand stitch along the top of the fabric along the shoulder section approximately 3″ (8cm) to create a neck hole in the middle.

3. To fasten, slip your head into the neck hole, and tie the rope around yourself a few times before fastening it around the back.

Wrap the rope around as many times as you like. Voila!
