DIY Shirred Mini Dress

Looking for a new sewing technique to try? What about shirring?

By now you’ll have noticed that shirring (or smocking) is not just for little girl’s dresses, in fact it’s been cropping up in every fashion look book for the warmer months. A while ago we showed you how to do shirring with elastic thread yourself, and because I continue to see it everywhere I wanted to share with you all the different things you can make with it. It’s such a versatile technique! Read on for more.

Five Shirred DIYs for you to Try

First things first, make sure you check out this tutorial, where you’ll find a video for how to do shirring with elastic thread. Then, make the projects below!

DIY Linen Wide Leg Pants  I love that you can use shirring to create a really lovely streamlined waist for pants.

DIY  Bodycon Dress If you love body con styles but want more support (and less vpl), a dress that’s fully shirred in the body is a great way to go. It works with a bump too!

DIY Cotton Maxi Dress Want to define the waist of a dress or top better? Consider using a few lines of shirring.

DIY Shirred Waistband Skirt Another maternity friendly style, this skirt uses shirring in the waistline to create a gathered detail.

DIY Shirred Mini Dress Use shirring to create some definition in the bust of a dress or top. Add a frill hem for the perfect party dress!
