Pinterest made me do it. You’ve been there right? But seriously, I’ve been lusting over those oversized fabric lanterns/lampshades for aggggggessss and we finally had a chance to make some of our own in the studio. Turns out they’re not actually that difficult if you have the right materials, and a little patience!
DIY Wire and Lace Lampshade
You need:
- Lace fabric (or any fabric that light can shine through)
- Wire (6.5m or 7yds)
- String or Twine
- Wire cutters
- Fabric scissors
- Measuring tape and pencil
How to:
- Cut out two rectangles of lace fabric, we cut ours 65 x 44cm (26 in x 17 in) but this will depend on how big you want your lantern to be.
2. Cut eight measurements of wire, 3 x 140cm for the circles, 4 x 30cm for the side supports and 1 x 70cm for the handle.
3. Create three circles using the 140cm length wires by twisting the ends together.
4. Attach two side support wires to opposite sides of the circle. Make two sets of this, one will become the bottom and the other will be the top.
5. Connect the top and bottom circles with the middle circle using the side supports and attach the handle. Twist to secure.
6. Using pieces of string (I cut mine about 12cm long) tie the lace to the wire frame.
Voila! I feel like this would be as nice for a dorm room as it would be for a wedding! We’re thinking of going HUGGGGE for the next one. Thoughts?
