And my obsession with rugs continues, and now it’s on to the DIY Round Rope Rug
If you guys have been following me for a while, youāll know about my love for rugs and how they make a space. Nothing adds life to a room like a rug, and in my experienceĀ they can actually make a space seem bigger, which is everything if you have a small apartment when every millimetre counts. Butttt if you’ve been looking around at rugs you’ll know they’re generally pretty expensive, meaning it can cost you quite a bit to outfit your whole house with some nice ones.Ā Recently, we found the perfect solution at the studio by creating our own DIY rope rug, one of the easiest projects we’ve done to date and oh so satisfying. Plus, once you’ve got all the materials through the door you can make it as big as you want – the sky’s the limit (or rather,Ā the walls).
Watch the video here:
DIY Round Rope Rug
For the glue, we chose to use liquid nails that we got from the hardware store, mainly because you can get such huge, affordable tubes with the applicator. But you can use any strongĀ style super glue you like. You’re going to need a lot!:)
1
Lay the tarpaulin down as this will be the base you will be gluing the rope onto. Start by rolling the rope into a small spiral.
2
Place sections of liquid nail glue around the rope spiral onto the tarpaulin to secure the rope as you wrap it around.
3
Continue until you have created the rug to the size you want. I made mine about 1.5m across. This is going to take some time! I would suggest doing it in batches, half an hour at a time. I think this size took about 4 hours. But so worth it š
When you are done simply cut the rope and trim the tarpaulin back to the size of theĀ rope spiral.Ā UmmmmĀ how much do I love these chairs that Ben designed? Lots and lots š

So smart!!! x
As usual, love this! I’ve been trying to find a rug for my bedroom and keep coming up short because of price and nothing fits in with my decor. This could work! And I have a lot of white in my bedroom so I need something to help break that up. Thanks for sharing!

Wow Geneva, I love this rug! It sounds so easy too, but I am assuming a bit time consuming? Either way, a great way to save some money and get a great looking rug out of it.

This is such a neat idea! Thanks for sharing. I will be making this one instead of buying a sisal rug.

OMG! Amazing! So genius! I’m definitely going to try this, as I need to make something to line under our water filter…so it won’t be as big, but same idea! Thank you!

I love this idea – and such a short and simple method to follow too. I imagine this could look great in a conservatory/sunroom, and I might even have to try it for when I have a garden shed, just to make things a bit more homely. Thanks for sharing!
This is a fabulous DIY and it looks lovely. I can’t wait to try it and thank you for sharing.
This is gorgeous. Love! <3

Does the tarp on the back not make this slippery on the floor?
Hi, I love you DIY tutorial on this adorable rug. I have one question. Where did you find a rope of this length? I am unable to find any for a reasonable price. Thank you. Love your projects. Sabina
Beautiful! I was searching for a diy rope rug and found this page. Where did you get your rope and what kind of rope did you use?
[…] As the name suggests, these rugs are made out of strong, vegetable fibres such as jute, sisal, seagrass, bamboo or coir. They are also flat-woven but unlike Kilims, due to the nature of the fibre, rugs produced from natural fibres are extremely durable and versatile, ideal for high traffic areas (like in our studio meeting area). Natural fibre rugs are a great alternative to rugs made of wool and cotton and are used to bring a casual look and feel to a room. They can be woven into a range of different shapes from rectangular to circular patterns (like this rope rug we made a little while ago here). […]
This will be fabulous for our foyer.. This is definitely a must do.
