It’s getting to that time of year again where the dining table becomes the focus of pretty much all your activities, and I’m definitely not complaining!
But for me, it’s as much about what’s on the table as what goes in my mouth. Which is why, I’m sure you’ll not be surprised, I’ve been wanting to get creative with plateware and cups for so long, I just couldn’t decide what to use. Enter Painters, non toxic paint markers by Elmers, which work on any surface (metal, wood, ceramics, fabric, leather etc) without rubbing off. Versatile like ceramic paint but easy to apply like a pen. Such a simple update to any old set of plates or tea cups and make the perfect personalised gift.
DIY Hand Painted Tea Cups
You need:
- Ceramic plateware
- Painter markers
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Cotton balls
How to:
1. First, it’s important to clean your cups really well, so that there aren’t any oils or other residue that will cause the paint to come off (if you have any slippage of the paint it will be because of the oil in your hands). Use your rubbing alcohol and cotton balls to do this and then dry really well. Once you have done this, use a light pencil to sketch out any designs you want on your plates, we went for really simple ones like circles and scallops.
2. Using your Painters, do the outline of the shape, and then fill it in.
3. Allow to dry overnight until the paint has set.
4. For those of you wondering about whether the paint is dishwasher safe, one option to increase staying power is to bake the cups in the oven to further set the paint and bind the glaze and the paint together. To do this, preheat the oven to 200 degrees celsius (approx 400 degree f), with your cups in there, and then heat for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, turn the oven off, but leave the cups in there until they have cooled down completely so they don’t crack from being exposed to room temperature. Give them a wash and you’re set!
In case you’re interested, there’s a monthly Painters competition happening until the end of the year, with each month being a different theme. This month is all about holiday decorations and gifts (like these plates and cups). All you have to do to enter is submit your projects here, and share your creations on social media with #StyleByAisle and #PaintersStyle. Monthly prize winners will receive winning a $500 price. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I decorated a Tea for One-Set (these sets where the teapot sits exactly on top of the cup) I gifted my boss with (we both like tea a lot). As we both then had the same Tea for One-Sets, I deceided to draw a herringbone pattern on the lid knob and handles, and filled some of the spaces with black and silver. I’m still proud of it, it was a simple project, but looks really expensive!
These are just adorable! It makes me want to host a tea party haha Great DIY!

These are so pretty! They look way more expensive than they are. I have to get me some of those paint pens.
Are these paint markers food safe?
They’re definitely non toxic, but if you’re worried I would decorate the cup away from the edges . 🙂
How adorable! I’ve been wanting to do something like this for ages, but get a little nervous about any toxins in the paint. Great to know about this non-toxic option!

Definitely gonna do this soon! So cute and creative, and pretty cheap too!

I love the idea! But do you think the markers resist to the dishwasher for example?
Hi love, we tested these out a little bit and found that the baking/heat setting method will help the paint to stay on under more rough circumstances like dishwashers, so I’ve outlined that above in point 4. Hope that helps!
Love this idea so much and your all stuff is so simple 🙂
Looks simple but it doesn’t mean it is easy. You must have steady hands! Wish I was able to do that oh xx

This is just lovely!
I love the one where you made the handle of the cup gold :). (I hope that is translated right, haha! In Dutch the handle of the cup is called a ‘ear’ is that the same in English?)
And I love the cute plants too 🙂 just bought some little cute plants myself today and I am so happy with them!
-xo-
Hahahaha that set if my face 🙂
Lovely idea! Looks super cute
These cups are delightful. Is the paint dishwasher safe, by any chance? I’ve seen similar projects that call for the cups to be baked after the paint is applied. (Not that hand washing isn’t okay – just helpful to know!)
Hi Julia, if you are keen for the paint to stand up under more rough circumstances, I would heat set the paint using the baking method, I’ve added that above for your reference 🙂
Love these – especially the scallop edged ones!
Thanks! I love a scallop 🙂
They look nice! xxx

I know right? I’m such a big fan of DIY gifts. 🙂
I am dying at how cute those tea cups are! And the best part is that you designed them yourself with markers and there was no need to bake!

What an AWESOME idea! I love such DIYs because they are incomplicated and perfect even for not a very crafty person 😉 I’ve been looking for pretty and minimalistic cups and mugs but couldn’t find anything I’d like. I think I’m going to grab some basic ones from Ikea and decorate them this way! It’s super cute.
